Ancient beauty. A personal meaning
The story
The lotus appears in the Dunhuang murals before it appears anywhere else in our work: under the feet of painted figures, along the border of a ceiling, in the hands of someone who travelled a long way to leave an offering. It was never only decoration. It was a way of saying that something can begin in difficulty and still open.
The design
We kept the shape and refused the scale. The petals are small enough to sit against the collarbone without announcing themselves, and the gold line that curls out of the flower is the movement a painter would use to suggest air. Ivory enamel carries the light; the deep blue centre gives the eye somewhere to rest.
About this piece
The necklace is the piece that sits closest to the voice. A single lotus, drawn in enamel and edged in gold, hangs from a fine chain that moves with the collarbone rather than against it. The blue centre is deep enough to read as night in daylight and as water in lamplight.
